Recruitment ad

'A number of people I knew worked for SABIC; they were all very enthusiastic about the company. When a SABIC personnel ad appeared in the magazine "Intermediair" in 2003, I took my chances. I was hired and am now a Maintenance Engineer Mechanical for SABIC.'

Why SABIC?

'SABIC is a very dynamic company with a positive work culture. It's a company that will grow in Europe in the future, and there is a lot of variation in mechanical activities. That's nice. But the main thing is that SABIC is simply a great company to work for.'

Learning every day

'I'm very happy about the variation in my work. One day I work at the plant analyzing data, the next I'm in the field service doing inspections or checking failures. I have done inspections and maintenance work in turnarounds, for example in the High Density Polyethylenes plant and in one of our naphtha crackers. When preparing a turnaround, I sometimes visit foreign service companies to discuss the scope of the work and the maintenance work. I like my job as it's also very interesting. I'm still learning every day.'

Training year

'My first year was a training year, I worked at two plants. Then I worked at one plant permanently. My mentors provided excellent guidance, answering all of my questions that year. And as time goes by, you become more independent.'

Did any courses?

'You start your job at SABIC with a number of safety courses and the basic management course. I then did several courses in my area of expertise, such as a corrosion course. I am now doing a course on welding and material techniques.'

Career opportunities?

'An interest registration was created after my training year. This is a report discussing how the first year went. No concrete career plan has been developed for me yet because I first want to develop further in my current position. In view of SABIC's expansion plans, I have ample career opportunities in the future.'
